In this post, I am going to list 15 Quant topics that, in my experience, decide most of your score. These are not “nice to know” or “maybe once in three years” topics.


These are the ones that keep coming back.


Also, quick note before we get into it. Indore and Rohtak have different patterns and difficulty levels. Indore tends to be trickier and more concept heavy, while Rohtak is more speed oriented. But the core topics below still matter for both.


Let’s get into it.


1. Percentages (the silent king)


This topic pretends to be basic but then quietly shows up everywhere - profit and loss, DI, ratios, mixtures, growth, discounts, population, even number systems sometimes. If your percentage base is weak, you will feel like the whole paper is harder than it is.


What to master:

  • Converting fractions to percentages quickly (and vice versa)

  • Successive percentage change (two discounts, two growth rates)

  • Percentage comparison and base value traps

A lot of “hard” questions are just percentage questions wearing a different outfit.

2. Ratio and Proportion


Ratios show up like background music. You might not notice, but if it stops, the whole thing falls apart.


You need to be comfortable with:

  • Dividing quantities in a given ratio

  • Combining ratios

  • Concept of variation (direct, inverse) as an extension of proportion

Also learn one habit. Whenever you see ratio, try to convert it into “parts”. That mental shift saves time.


3. Averages (and weighted averages)


IPMAT loves averages because they test both concept and speed.


Regular average questions can be direct. But the weighted ones. That is where people lose time.


You should be solid with:

  • New average after adding or removing items

  • Average speed vs average of numbers (not the same thing)

  • Weighted average in mixtures, marks, prices, groups

If you do mock tests, you will notice something. Averages are often the “easy marks” questions. Unless you overthink them.


4. Profit, Loss, Discount (and Marked Price)


This is not just about formulas. It is about reading the story correctly.


Common IPMAT patterns:

  • MP, SP, CP chains with two discounts

  • Profit percent on CP vs profit percent on SP confusion

  • Successive discounts and successive profits

One strong suggestion. Build a small sheet of standard values: 10%, 20%, 25%, 33.33%, 40%, 50% and how they translate into fractions. It pays off.


These mathematical concepts are not only crucial for exams like IPMAT or NMAT but also play a significant role in various fields including business and finance. 5. Simple Interest and Compound Interest (with growth logic)

If you understand the growth logic, you do not need to memorize too much. You just need to know how multiplication compounds.


6. Time and Work (and efficiency based thinking)


Time and Work is basically ratios again, but with people and days.


This topic decides your score because:

  • Questions look long, but solve fast if you use efficiency

  • Many students still use LCM method blindly and waste time


What you need:

  • Efficiency concept (work per day)

  • Combined work, alternate days, pipes and cisterns style setups

  • “A is x% more efficient than B” type conversions

Once you get good, these become quick wins.


7. Time, Speed and Distance (especially trains and relative speed)


Speed is another “everywhere” concept.


You should be comfortable with:

  • Relative speed (same direction, opposite direction)

  • Trains crossing platform/pole, two trains crossing

  • Average speed for equal distance vs equal time

  • Boats and streams basics (if they appear)

The best part is, most of these are formula light if your concept is clear. The worst part is, one small misread and the whole answer goes off.


So practice accuracy here, not just speed.

8. Mixtures and Alligation


Mixtures questions look scary to beginners. Then you learn alligation and suddenly it is like someone turned on a light.


What to focus on:

  • Basic alligation (two component)

  • Repeated replacement questions (they appear in tougher sets)

  • Mixture with cost price, profit, or concentration

Also, do not force alligation everywhere. Some questions are simpler with ratios and weighted average.


9. Linear Equations (one and two variables)


This is foundational. And it is assumed.


IPMAT uses linear equations directly and indirectly:

  • Finding two unknowns from conditions

  • Translating word problems to equations

  • Combining with ratios, numbers, ages

Your target should be: form the equation quickly. That is the real skill. Solving is usually the easy part.


10. Quadratic Equations and inequalities


Quadratics come up often enough that you cannot ignore them.


You should know:

  • Factorization patterns

  • Relationship between roots and coefficients (sum and product)

  • Nature of roots (discriminant)

  • Inequality solving involving quadratic expressions (especially in Indore style questions)

A lot of students can solve quadratics slowly. IPMAT requires you to solve them quickly and cleanly.


11. Arithmetic Progression (AP) and basic series


Sequences and series show up in forms that are usually not too advanced. But they can be time consuming if you do not know standard results.


Master:

  • nth term and sum of first n terms of AP

  • Odd/even number sums

  • Common series like 1 + 2 + … + n, squares sometimes

  • How to create an AP from a word statement

Indore sometimes frames these as logical pattern questions. Still AP underneath.


12. Number System basics (remainders, divisibility, last digit)


This is one of the biggest differentiators.


Because if you are good at number system, you save time and avoid heavy calculation. If you are weak, you try to brute force. And you bleed minutes.


Key subtopics:

  • Divisibility rules (not all, but the useful ones)

  • Remainders and modular arithmetic basics

  • Cyclicity for last digit and last two digits

  • Factors, multiples, HCF, LCM

Also, do not treat number system like 50 different tricks. Build it slowly. Understand patterns.


13. Logs, indices, surds (exponents family)


This area is small but sharp. IPMAT loves it because it tests conceptual clarity.


You should be clear about:

  • Laws of indices and simplification

  • Surd rationalization and basic operations

  • Log rules (product, quotient, power)

  • Converting between exponential and log forms

These questions are often 1 minute questions if you know the rules. And 6 minute nightmares if you do not.


14. Geometry and Mensuration (only the high frequency parts)


Geometry is broad, so you cannot “do everything” in the same depth. You should focus on the parts that show up most.


High frequency list:

  • Triangles (similarity, area ratios, Pythagoras, special triangles 30-60-90 and 45-45-90)

  • Circles (tangents, chords, angles in the same segment)

  • Quadrilaterals basics

  • Mensuration: area and perimeter of basic shapes, volume and surface area of cuboid/cylinder/cone/sphere

Do not memorize 100 theorems. Learn the 15 that actually get used.


And practice diagrams. Geometry is visual. If you can draw a clean figure quickly, you already have an advantage.


15. Data Interpretation (DI) and calculation management


Even if DI is “not a separate topic” in your mind, it becomes a score-decider in the actual paper because it combines:

  • Reading comprehension with numbers

  • Percentages, ratios, averages

  • Speed and accuracy under time pressure


What to work on:

  • Quick approximation (but knowing when not to approximate)

  • Breaking calculations smartly (cancelling, factorization)

  • Picking the right questions inside a DI set

Many students lose marks not because DI is tough, but because they panic when they see a big table.


You should train yourself to stay calm and choose.


A quick way to use this list (without getting overwhelmed)


Here is a simple approach that works for most students.


Step 1: Split topics into three buckets

  • Bucket A (must master): Percentages, Ratios, Averages, Number System, Algebra basics, Time Work, Speed

  • Bucket B (must be comfortable): Profit Loss, SI CI, Mixtures, Quadratic, AP

  • Bucket C (selective focus): Geometry depth depends on your current level, but do the high frequency list


Step 2: Practice in cycles, not chapters

Instead of finishing an entire chapter and moving on, do this:

  • 30 questions of Percentages over 3 days

  • Then mix 10 Percentages + 10 Ratios + 10 Averages

  • Then add DI sets that force you to use them together

IPMAT is not a school exam. It is not chapter wise in real life.

  • Which topics give you easy marks

  • Where silly mistakes happen

The most common mistake I see (and it hurts)


Students try to “complete the syllabus” and feel productive.


But their accuracy stays at 60% and their speed stays random. And then they wonder why mocks do not improve.


For IPMAT Quant, completion is not the finish line. Control is.


Control over:

  • the few topics that repeat

  • the 2 minute questions

  • your calculation habits

  • your panic response when a question looks unfamiliar
